Annie Pearl was First Cousin to my sister Carrie Mae and me. Because we lived in a strictly religious home in Park Slope Brooklyn, and had few friends, Ann was a welcomed addition to our small family. Annie Pearl brought warmth and laughter to our lives. We were young teens when she taught us about our Georgia family and our roots. She often took us to her work at the Worlds Fair where she met her beloved husband Sam. Sam was Ann's Camelot. They loved each other dearly. When I look back, I chuckle as I recall the times when our dad, her uncle Lonnie insisted we serve as chaperone during their dates, they respectfully cooperated. A woman herself, Ann displayed respect for our ailing Grandmother for whom she was caregiver when she moved to Boston Mass before moving to Brooklyn. Ann also taught to us New Yorkers to say "sir" or "ma'am" when addressing older ones. She also taught us real downhome Georgia cooking. Ann had this quiet wit and was good for catching you off guard with it. My sister and I were the bridesmaids in her wedding, and was by her side at the tragic passing of her beloved Sam, and for the joyful birth of their beautiful daughter Sandra. Ann had a very quiet and calm demeanor, but once she started laughing, nothing could stop her. We spoke a few months before her passing. I lament her passing but death can never break those ties nor erase those lifelong memories. Hugs, snuggles and kisses Big Sister Cousin Annie Pearl.
