Obituary of Sybil C Scott
Please share a memory of Sybil to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Sybil Constance Scott affectionately known as "Carol" was called home on October 1st, 2016 in New York, NY to the loving arms of her Lord. She is fiercely loved and will be greatly missed.
Carol was born on December 29th, 1949 to Leon and Ethel Scott. Growing up in Brooklyn, New York, Carol attended and graduated from St. Gregory the Great Roman Catholic School and Clara Barton High School for Health Professions respectively. She continued her studies in higher education at Pace University and The Audrey Cohen College for Human Services.
Back in the 1960's you could find Carol participating in talent show competitions, solo or with her group "The Sly, Slick and the Wicked". Winning several competitions would earn her the opportunity to perform as an opening act for Jackie Wilson at the world famous Apollo Theatre in Harlem, New York. She would go on to cut her own 45" recording of her signature cover song "Danny Boy".
Carol began her tenured career in social service in the early 1970's at Model Cities. However, it wasn't long before she found her passion for helping women and children within her community and began her career as a caseworker for the then Agency for Child Development. She assisted in many areas of social service but was most proud of her intricate involvement in the development of Kianga House, a home for young mothers and children. After 25 years of service, she retired to enjoy her life traveling and entering poker tournaments and playing slots at her second home, the Borgata Casino in Atlantic City.
A devoted mother, Carol's 1st daughter Nakyia was born in 1974, followed by Gylen eight years later. She loved her girls deeply and sacrificed to provide them with opportunities she didn't have. She immersed her kids in the arts, travel, cultural/educational activities, a tradition she continued with her grandsons, Tre and Zion. By doing so, she created a legacy of cultural enrichment and academic excellence that will be continued to be honored for generations to come.
Carol leaves behind to celebrate her life and legacy, two daughters Nakyia Douglas and Gylen Bryant; Grandsons Tre Scott Warren and Zion Roberts; brother Kirk P. Cohen; sister Charisse Kennedy; in-laws Rosa Lee Cohen and James O. Kennedy II; nephews Kirk D. Cohen and James C. Kennedy III; and niece Timberlyn Wilson and a host of great nieces,, nephews, family and friends. She will be truly missed.
