Obituary of Faye Walker Chambers
Faye Walker Chambers, “a quiet power,” was highly respected and admired by all who knew her. She was born in Perry, Georgia to Jimmy and Rosa Lee Walker on October 19, 1946. She was the third of thirteen children and the younger of a set of twins. She attended Houston County Training School in Perry, Georgia where she graduated in 1966 at the top of her class. She married Lonnie Chambers Jr. and to this union was born her one and only beautiful daughter Kara Jeanira Smith.
Her early years were spent in Perry, GA, but she moved to New York in 1966 where she began her career as a childcare provider. Her ambition and drive lead her to become a trained and licensed psychiatric therapy aide and EMT at Pilgrim Psychiatric Hospital for 37 years. God blessed Faye with unique gifts that allowed her to connect with people, and they found comfort in her friendship and support.
During her free time, she loved dancing to her favorite songs, spending time reading a good book, learning new things, or just cooking her famous pecan pies and banana pudding desserts for family and friends. In addition, she was a very good seamstress. She lived life to the fullest, traveling and exploring new places and attending exciting and informative events that she would share with others.
Faye was a proud and nurturing grandmother who cherished quality times with her grandsons, Jayson Jr., and Ellis, as they were the joy of her life. She passed on to them a wealth of family stories, shared games from her childhood, taught them how to swim, ride bikes, and how to plant a garden. The boys were richly blessed with togetherness and mutual sharing of their maternal and paternal grandparents who lovingly exposed them to travel, plays, community events, galas, educational programs, and books, books, and more books.
Faye loved God and throughout her life, she demonstrated His love by providing exemplary service at home, work, community, and church. Proverbs 31:30 states “Favor is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised.” This scripture captures the essence of her life.
Faye was a founding member of Destiny House Christian Center where she was affectionally called “Mother Faye,” because of her nurturing and loving spirit. Her undeniable caring and generous spirit will indeed be greatly missed by all who have known her.
Left to cherish her memory, a devoted daughter Kara Jeanira Smith, Protective Son-in-law Jayson Smith (Roc); Caring Grandsons Jayson Smith Jr., Ellis Smith; Great-Granddaughter Annastasia Smith, Siblings; twin brother Ray Walker (Lillie Bell), Milton Walker (Nancy), Cornelius Walker, Sammy Walker (Susan), Alma Lawson, Lucille Rufus (David), Priscilla Wilson, Mary Alice Grove, Yolanda Lawson (Kelly), Sharon Walker; Sister-in-Law Florence Thomas-Grimes (Clarence) a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and devoted friends Phyllis Stewart Williams, and Mini-Imah Muhammad.
Preceded in death by Lonnie Chambers Jr (Husband) Benjamin Walker (Brother) and Jacqueline Walker (Sister).
Faye is resting in the arms of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Therefore, we must rejoice and not mourn, but celebrate the life of our dear and beloved sister in Christ.
