Obituary of John E. Turner

John Earl Turner, Jr. was born on October 3, 1940 to the late John and Beulah 
Turner in Courtland, VA. He departed this life on February 26, 2021 at LIJ Valley 
Stream Hospital. 
 
John spent his early years in Courtland with his parents and younger siblings, 
Charles, Vernon, and Jean Turner. As a teenager, he relocated to NY where he 
completed high school. After graduation, John worked for S. Klein’s Department 
Store, Midway Shipping, and Meyer’s Beverage Mart. 
 
In 1982, he met the love of his life, Margaret, and they wed on September 3, 
1989. Their union blended  their family of 6 children: Susan, Michael, Tony, 
Raymond, Reginald, and Montel. 
 
John was known for his strengths and his warm, friendly, and positive spirit. He 
enjoyed fishing, helping others, and sports. His favorite sport was baseball, and he 
spent many days as an umpire in the local Rockville Centre league. 
 
John understood the importance of a personal relationship with the Lord. As a 
child he was a member of David Temple AME Zion Church in Courtland, VA. After 
settling in New York, John later joined the St. Paul AME Church in Rockville 
Centre, NY under the leadership of the late Rev. Elliot J. Hobbs and continued as a 
member under the guidance of Rev. Tristan J. Salley, the current pastor. 
 
John was predeceased by his parents, John and Beulah Turner; siblings Vernon 
Turner, Jean Turner-Owens; and children Tony Turner, and Michael Turner. He is 
survived by his wife of 31 years, Margaret Turner; children Susan Smith of 
Hampton, VA., Raymond Turner of Massapequa, NY, Reginald (Melissa) Mattison 
of Deluth, GA, and Montel (Karen) Johnson of Commack, NY; Brother Charles 
(Gloria) Turner of Courtland, VA; his beloved aunt, Laura Chambliss of Queens, 
NY; 10 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
