The sun rose for Joan Delores Alves on March 30, 1938. Joan was born in Harlem, New York, to Leola Smalls and Arthur Dangerfield. Shortly after her birth, the family moved to Rockville Center, New York. Joan graduated from Rockville Center High School in 1956 and later completed a Certificate of Training at the Alice B. Skinner Secretarial Academy all the while attending Nassau Community College. Further seeking high quality academics, Joan transferred to Malloy College. Joan's determination for employment successfully landed her a position at the New York Bell Telephone Company where she was one of the first black Telephone Operators in the state of New York. After 10-years with the New York Bell Telephone Company, Joan took advantage of an opportunity to serve the public through the Economic Opportunity Commissions (EOC) Comprehensive Employment and Training Act (CETA) Program where she accepted a temporary position at the Nassau County District Attorney's Office as a File Clerk. Joan's hard work and determination moved her forward to Administrative Personnel where she became a permanent fixture of the organization before retiring in 2009. Joan loved the Lord and was a devout Christian. She was an active member of the Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church of Freeport, New York, but became inactive due to ailments associated with her heart. The Lord called her home at sunset on March 29, 2015. Joan was strong member of the Nassau County Community. She was an avid reader who could often be seen in the library. Joan enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, traveling the country, going to the theater, completing crossword puzzles, reading books and newspapers, and was a huge animal lover. Joan truly loved life itself. She leaves to cherish her memory- Three sisters: Carol Dangerfield, Barbara Dangerfield, Kalea Dangerfield, and Helen Dangerfield (deceased); Five Children: Kim White (Ron), Pam Alves- Sandifur (Gary), Benita Alves, Michelle D'Orsogna, and Christopher Burton (Paula). Seven Grandchildren: Thiara Alves, Tyriek Alves, Vincent Alves (beloved), Thynisha Alves, Jermaine Dent (Libby), Robert Mayes, Kai Barnes, and Richard D'Orsogna, and a host of nieces, nephews, family members and former co-workers of the Nassau County community of Long Island New York and the Newberry County community of South Carolina.
