REVEREND DAVID A. HUNT, SR.
To parents of James A. Hunt and Lillian A. Hunt-Long in Berwind, West Virginia on October 9, 1925…A son and servant was born.
David A. Hunt, Sr. was raised on the family homestead in Beckley, West Virginia. He attended school and helped his mother in the family store until he began working in the coal mines. David was later drafted into the United States Army where he served as an Ammunition Specialist and achieved the rank of Tech 4 during World War II, until he was honorably discharged.
He then relocated to Hempstead, New York with his mother and other family members. It was then when he answered the call to serve his Lord and Savior. As a minister of the Gospel, with the love of his life, Queenie by his side, he attended and graduated from bible college and was ordained by the AME Zion Conference as a licensed preacher in 1958.
David and Queenie's union produced four children, whom they loved, nurtured and provided a well- rounded home for, instilling education, etiquette, love of family and always God first.
David's call to serve and disciplined lifestyle led him down many roads and positions, which he held and mastered everyone. He spent 33 years as medical supply purchasing agent in the VA Hospital in Northport, several churches as pastor and treasurer within the AME Zion Conference, American Legion, Masons, Hempstead Heights Civic Association, Long Island Council of Churches and Park Lake Housing Authority to name a few.
His heart and passion for the teaching and preaching of the gospel led to over 50 years of service as Pastor Extraordinaire. Never failing to lead by example whether it was opening the doors of the home to those in need, providing transportation, visitation of the sick or bereaved, mentoring young pastors or as his health began to fail, showing those who spent time with him how to endure with dignity, grace and style. His legacy of love, discipline, laughter and yes even his corny jokes, will be cherished and remembered always.
David exchanged time for eternity on November 6, 2015 at South Shore Rehabilitation Center in Freeport, New York.
Predeceased by a host of family, including his parents, three siblings and three children. He leaves to celebrate his life, his children, David A. Hunt, Jr. (Janet) of Mastic, Sandra Hunt and Mary A. Hunt of Hempstead, New York; ten grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, three God children, and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, friends and the AME Zion Conference.
