Norma Sinkfield was born to Christabel Broxton and David Caton on October 25, 1929. She was raised and educated in Brooklyn, New York and for some time at a boarding school in Wading River, Long Island. She later furthered her education in "Manpower School", a vocational training and placement center and began working at Bankers Trust in New York City in 1972. She worked there until 1997 and retired with distinction after 25 years of service. Her work ethic gained her a reputation for punctuality and efficiency.
She was a mother to 5 children: David, Rachel, Nelson, Douglas and Donald. Norma's sisters were: Henrietta Booker, Sara Caton, Margie Brown, Charmaine Denis, Bonnie Brown and Connie Brown. Her brothers were Philip Caton and Sonny Caton. She had an abundance of nieces and nephews. Norma outlived two husbands- Starkey McCullough and Douglas Sinkfield.
Her grandchildren bought the most meaning and happiness to her life. Skylar and Chaz, now eight and four years old, were around her constantly and will miss her tremendously. She did not just stay in the house with them. She took them to parks, to stores for new toys and grocery shopping. They were inseparable.
A native of Brooklyn, New York, Norma also lived in Queens, New York and for the last 18 years in Long Island. While in Long Island, Norma participated in a variety of activities. She was a literacy volunteer who taught adults basic reading skills. Her passion for reading manifested itself in this role. She was an avid bowler, having been a member of two bowling leagues. She also was a member of the NAACP and had received recognition for her work. Norma was a fixture at our local polls on each Election Day. She worked for the Board of Elections for many years helping people to complete the voting process.
Norma believed in the ability of people to progress and achieve. In her own life, she made many sacrifices for her children and relatives. Later, she volunteered her time to help others further their abilities. May her legacy live on through all whom she has touched.
