Obituary of John J. Scott

Please share a memory of John to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
John Joseph Scott Sr., son of the late Barbara and Aaron Scott, Sr., was born on January 17, 1951 in Long Island, NY. He was the last born of eight children. John was reared in the Church and officially professed his love to God on April 4, 1962 at Mount Sinai Baptist Church, in Roosevelt, NY. John, affectionately called "Johnny Joe" by his loved ones and peers, was well-known within his community. He attended Roosevelt Public Schools, where he became known for his incredible strength. He played and flourished in football, but his success in wrestling earned him a full scholarship to Morgan State University, in Baltimore, MD. While attending Morgan, John worked as a counselor in a group home for troubled adolescents. He graduated with his Bachelor's Degree in Sociology and Anthropology. John met and married the love of his life, Shirley Scott, in Baltimore, MD. Their union produced 5 children. The close relationship with his parents, and the career opportunities encouraged the move back to John's hometown of Roosevelt, NY. Shortly after, John began his career with the New York City Human Resource Administration. He climbed the ranks to becoming a Supervisor until he retired after nearly 30 years of service with the organization. At home, John deeply cherished his relationship with his family. He taught his children the importance of their rich history and the major contributions of our people, through documentaries such as "Eyes on the Prize." John's great interest in National Geographic influenced the entire family to learn more about nature and wildlife. His love of the outdoors, encouraged many family road trips owing to his fun-loving, adventurous spirit. However, even while indoors, he found a way to spark excitement by cracking jokes, playing music, dancing, playing board games, and hosting movie nights. John quietly departed this life on Monday, August 7th, 2017. The memory of his smile and laughter will always live on in his family and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, Aaron Scott Sr., Barbara Lee Hazel Scott, and his brothers, Jeff, Ronald, Eugene and Everett. He is survived by his children: Jerome House, Raquel-Kiannaa, John Scott Jr. (Shantell), Renard Scott (Sharelle), Cheryl Scott Pierre-Paul (Rodney) and Sabrina; siblings: Aaron Jr. (Josephine), Virginia (Errol), Jessie (Sunye), Robert (Gloria), James (Lisa), Ricky (Barbara), Reginald, Phillip, Mark and Michael, Pedro, Anthony, and Lona Lemon ; his grandchildren: Matthew, Lea, Daniel, Jayden, Kayla, Isabel, June, Julian, and Kasaun; and a host of loving relatives and friends.
