Patricia Naomi Berkeley Obituary

Patricia Naomi Berkeley entered this world on July 12, 1941, in Kingston, Jamaica, born to Vinella and Leroy Speid. From early on, she carried a quiet strength and a determination that would shape her entire life. After finishing high school and secretarial school in Jamaica, she made a bold move in 1968—leaving her home, her family, and everything familiar to start a new life in the United States. She came alone, but she came with purpose.

Patricia worked wherever opportunity opened its doors. She cleaned the homes of the wealthy with pride and dignity, and later returned to school to become a home health aide, a role that perfectly matched her natural gift for caring for others. Through grit and sacrifice, she saved enough to bring her three children to the U.S. in the 1970s—a triumph she considered one of her greatest accomplishments.

Over her 84 years, Pat built a life marked by generosity, resilience, and an unshakeable sense of who she was. She purchased two homes in Long Beach, NY—something she never boasted about, but quietly cherished. And even as she built a life here, she never forgot Jamaica. She was always sending barrels back home, often to people she had never met. Helping others wasn’t something she did occasionally—it was her way of life.

Her home in Long Beach became a safe haven for anyone who needed a place to land. If you were down on your luck, Pat didn’t ask questions—she opened her door. She fed you, housed you, encouraged you, and expected nothing in return. That was her ministry.

Patricia loved nature with a childlike joy. Her yard was always bursting with flowers—bright, bold, and full of life, just like her. She adored birds and animals, and she had a soft spot for anything that bloomed. And when she stepped out, she stepped out in style. Pat was a dresser—sharp, elegant, and always put together. She loved fine attire and wore it with confidence.

She was also famous for her Jamaican rum cake, baked with the kind of love and precision only she possessed. And above all, she was deeply spiritual. Pat honored God in her words, her actions, and the way she treated people. Her Bible was never far from reach.

On January 30th, 2026, God called her home. Her work here was complete. She lived the way God asks all of us to live—by loving, giving, and lifting others. Pat left this world better than she found it, and she did it without ever asking for applause.

Patricia is survived by her daughter Christine N’Diaye; her son Derrick Oldacre; and her grandchildren Shawn Hanlan, Khadim N’Diaye, and Khadijah N’Diaye. She is also survived by her brothers George and Joseph Speid; her sister‑in‑law Silvena Speid; her niece Chantai Speid, nephew Adrian Speid  and great‑niece Leilani Speid‑Gordon. She was predeceased by her beloved daughter Annamarie Hanlan. Patricia also leaves behind her adopted children—Antwan, Akira, Tayler, and Zy’Asia Berkeley—each of whom she embraced with the same love she gave her own.

Her legacy lives on in every life she touched, every person she helped, and every heart she lifted.

Rest in peace, Patricia Cargill Speid Berkeley.
