It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Horace Hectford Bailey Sr., affectionately known as "Sir B," "Mr. Bailey," and "Deacon Bailey" by his beloved sons, protégés, and community members. Born in a rural community in the Parish of Manchester, Jamaica, on November 20th, 1943, Horace's life journey was one of resilience and unwavering dedication.
After the loss of his mother at the tender age of seven, Horace faced life’s challenges with remarkable strength. Though his education was limited to primary school, he pursued training at a trade school. It was here that he laid the foundation for a life filled with hard work. He began his career as a barber in Clarendon, Jamaica, where his path intertwined with that of his beloved wife, Hyacinth. They were married for 50 wonderful years, raising seven children together, and his love for her was evident in all facets of their life.
Horace's entrepreneurial spirit flourished as he transitioned from barbering to carpentry, eventually establishing a successful trucking business that he operated for over a decade. In 1991, he migrated to Brooklyn, New York, with his wife and their seven children, seeking new opportunities.
In the United States, Horace continued to share his talents, not only as a part-time barber but also in the medical services industry, first working in the building services department at Brook Plaza Medical and later as a supervisor at Flushing Hospital until his retirement in 2013. Following his retirement, he fulfilled a lifelong dream by opening Sir B’s Barber Shop in Brooklyn, where he became a source of inspiration, wisdom, and guidance for the community.
A long-serving member and Deacon at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Brooklyn, Horace dedicated his life to serving both his church and the surrounding community. His angelic spirit, combined with a quiet strength, was marked by love and gentle kindness, earning him the respect and admiration of all who knew him.
Horace believed in the power of hard work, dedication, and determination, values he instilled in his children and exemplified throughout his life. One of his core beliefs, often expressed through his favorite quote, was, “The reward for good work is more work.” He cherished his faith, his family, and was particularly devoted to playing the guitar for hours on Sunday afternoons after church, a passion that brought him immense joy and fulfillment.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Hyacinth; two sons; five daughters; three great-grandchildren; twenty grandchildren; five brothers; one sister; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
A memorial service will be held on December 17th from 4 PM to 8 PM, followed by funeral services on December 18th from 11 AM to 1 PM.
Horace Hectford Bailey Sr. will be remembered not only for his achievements but for the love and light he brought into the lives of those around him. He leaves behind a legacy of inspiration that will continue to resonate through his family and community.
